Cancercare, Lakes Centre, Kendal.

Our group meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 1.30pm in the offices of CancerCare, Burton Road, Kendal. LA9 4BT. (unless we have organised an event)

CancerCare was formed in 1983 by a small group of volunteers and practitioners from the caring professions, and registered as a charity in 1985.

Each year, CancerCare provides emotional, psychological, physical and social support to around 1500 local people, individually or in groups, through an extensive range of therapies provided by professional, skilled and qualified therapists.
They also offer advice and information on all aspects of life affected by cancer. Throughout the area informal friendship groups meet regularly to offer mutual support.

RURAL WHEELS Cumbria County Council

Rural Wheels is a unique community transport scheme that helps to address the issue of a lack of good public transport provision in some rural areas of Cumbria.  It provides door-to-door transport for people, when required and at a reasonable cost of 35p/mile.  The aim is to make better use of the various forms of transport that are available and help to tackle social exclusion.
The service can be used for a variety of purposes including:
  • Making connections with buses or trains
  • Doctor, Dentist or Optician appointments
  • Visiting friends or family in hospital
  • Shopping
  • Visiting friends or family
Rural Wheels uses a 'Smartcard' to pay for travel and a central booking system to plan journeys.  Passengers need to apply for the Smartcard before they are able to use the scheme.  The 'value' of the Smartcard can be topped up with the transport provider or alternatively at local post offices, libraries, mobile libraries, etc.  Travel under the scheme needs to be booked before noon the day before travelling by telephone so as to allow the most cost-effective use of the transport resources available.  Users may be asked to share transport, which is offered at a reduced price.

Christmas Lunch at the Longlands Hotel, Carnforth.

In December our members enjoyed Christmas lunch at the
Longlands Hotel.  The menu and food were excellent and
a good time was had by all.

With all the hustle and bustle December brings with organising Christmas,
it was decided that we deserved a little pampering for our January meeting.
We therefore booked an afternoon session at "the retreat" Kendal College.

The Wombelles
(Kendal & South Lakes Gynaecology Cancer Group)

The Wombelles Group was formed and funded by the Macmillan Cancer Charity in 2012.

We are a group of ladies who have all been informed, within the last few years, that we
had cancer. We have therefore, like you, experienced the earth shattering news which
starts with a total numbness and then we struggle with every type of emotion possible.

Fortunately, most of us had family and friends who all rally around, giving us the support
and reassurance we needed on a day to day basis. Many of us required surgery which
is scary  to say the least, having never been in hospital, unless visiting family and friends.
It’s just as well that we did not know this would be the easy part and that our following
treatment would be both challenging and extremely tiring.

I never thought that my illness would leave me nervous, anxious and with very little
confidence going into company or driving. Previously, I had been a very confident person
always organising events for family and friends. Apparently, this lack of confidence is not
unusual and many ladies experience this after a long illness.

We would like to invite ladies like you to join our small social group where we enjoy outings
to Museums, Health Spas, and National Trust Properties etc.
We hold our meeting on the third Tuesday of every month. If you feel nervous of coming
along on your own, please invite a friend as they will be very welcome.

If you would like further information please contact: Rhona Barton

Mobile No. 07770851896 or Telephone No. 01539558636

We do not purport to be a Support Group but we can however inform our members on
   where advice can be obtained.

I have been extremely lucky with the support I have received from my friends and family,
but, many ladies with no siblings, lose contact with friends when they retire from work and
this group is a good way of meeting and making new acquaintances.
